Woman Killed in U.S. 460 Truck Crash

No one should make improper turns – but especially not trucks. Given how slowly they turn and how difficult it is to come to a complete stop at the last minute, trucks should never make improper turns. When they happen, disaster can strike. That’s what happened on U.S. 460 last week.

An improper turn led to the death of a Brookneal, Virginia woman last week. The incident occurred the morning of February 2, 2017. Police say they received a call around 8:30 that morning about an accident. Upon investigation, they learned that a tractor trailer heading westbound on U.S. 460 made an improper turn from the right hand lane to a crossover. The car behind the truck failed to slow down in time to prevent a collision. The driver rear ended the truck as it was trying to turn. Though she was wearing her seat belt, the woman driving the car was killed.

Police have charged the truck driver with making an improper turn. The crash is still under investigation. Officials say they are looking to determine exactly why the victim did not stop in time to prevent a collision. Speed, they say, was not a factor in the crash.

A rear-end crash between two cars may have only resulted in a fender bender, but because the truck is so much larger than the car involved in this collision, it’s sadly not surprising that the incident ended in tragedy. When passenger cars square off against big rigs, they nearly always come off worse.

We send our condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim. As the investigation continues, we hope they find peace in the answers they receive from officials. The weeks and months following a fatal crash can result in a lot of stress – and a lot of questions.
