Fatal Chesapeake Military Hwy Dump Truck Crash

A woman has died after being struck by a truck in Chesapeake. The crash occurred on Monday, April 4, 2016, along Military Highway near Heidi Drive. Authorities report that a van had pulled over to the side of the road to change a tire. The three passengers got out to work on making the change when they were struck by a dump truck. One woman was killed, while the other two – along with the driver of the truck – were injured. The injured victims were taken to local hospitals, where they are expected to make full recoveries. No charges have been filed yet, but the accident is still under investigation.

We send our thoughts to the friends and family of the victims during this surely difficult time.

Deadly Crashes on Virginia Roadways

It might surprise you, but accidents like this one are all too common. A routine flat tire can become deadly when drivers don’t pay enough attention to the road ahead of them. Even at 4 in the morning, like when this accident occurred, busy streets like Military Highway can be incredibly dangerous. In fact, the late hour can be deceptive. Just because there are relatively few vehicles on the street doesn’t mean you’re necessarily any safer than if you were broken down during rush hour.

If you find yourself having car troubles, try to pull off onto a side street. They’re typically less congested, and drivers will be more likely to slow down and stay on the lookout for pedestrians.  If a side street isn’t readily available, pull as far off the road as possible. Even a few inches can save you from a distracted driver.

As the investigation continues, it will be interesting to see what caused the driver of the dump truck to overlook the disabled vehicle. Given the early hour of the accident, it’s certainly possible that the truck driver was driving while drowsy. It’s a growing problem, one that the government has tried to address.
