People riding bicycles are a common occurrence on the road these days. They are cheap and effective modes of transportation. They are particularly useful for young people that may have to get from place to place without the aid of a motor vehicle. Unfortunately, bicycles do not provide much in the way of protection during accidents.

Sunday, June 7th, 2015 in Ashland, Virginia was witness to the kind of accident that we all hope never to see. At around 11:00 PM, an 18-year old woman was traveling north in the right-hand lane of Washington Highway. At the same time, a tractor trailer was heading in the same direction. At some point, for unclear reasons, the tractor trailer ran into the young woman. Horrifically, she was pronounced dead at the scene. She had just moved with her family to Virginia last year, and her brother said “She was a beautiful person inside and out. She will be missed by so many people.”

Not much was known about the accident as of Monday, but the driver of the tractor trailer has been charged with reckless driving. No alcohol appears to have been involved in the accident, and the driver does not appear to have been speeding.

An accident this week on Route 58 in Suffolk  involved five different vehicles. This accident and another involving a tractor-trailer and a pick-up truck this week could indicate some of the dangers of driving on Route 58. In any case, it has certainly been a rough week on that particular stretch of road.

13 News Now reported on the five vehicle accident that occurred on April 30, 2015. The accident occurred around noon in the area of the ramp to Boulevard/Route 10. There was an assortment of vehicles involved in the accident. A tractor-trailer, a tanker truck, a private medical transport and two passenger vehicles all found themselves participants in this collision. However, the luck of the different drivers appears to have been good, all things considered. The tanker truck involved in the accident was not carrying anything in its tank. As well, the private emergency vehicle did not appear to be carrying any passengers. At the time of the article, it was still unclear what caused the accident. From the article, it also appears that only one person was sent the hospital.  The road was closed after the accident and was re-opened sometime after.

This accident could easily have been much worse. For example, if the tanker had been carrying a flammable substance.  The parties involved were very lucky that no one was more seriously hurt. If you have been injured in a car accident that wasn’t your fault, you need not suffer in vain. Contact the experienced attorney at Richard J. Serpe, PC to discuss your case for free.

The situations that can lead to an accident are infinite. The most important thing for drivers is to follow the rules of the road. Often times, someone driving to slow or to fast can cause other drivers to become irritated and lead to rash decisions. Bad decisions on the road can lead to unfortunate results for everyone.

Take an accident that occurred on Route 58  in Suffolk recently, for example. According to Wavy, the lead vehicle was traveling at a slow pace. A tractor-trailer rear ended the pick-up from behind, forcing it off the road. The tractor-trailer caromed off the road as well. It eventually came to rest against several trees off the right hand shoulder of the road. From the news article, it is unclear what exactly caused the tractor-trailer to rear end the pick-up truck. The drivers from both vehicles were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

In this accident, two large vehicles collided. It was extremely lucky that no one was killed. Following the rules and paying attention is all important on the road. When people fail to do these things, injuries are sure to follow.

Faulty brakes are thought to have caused a scary chain reaction crash among tractor trailers last week. The accident occurred along Interstate 81 in Pulaski County, Virginia when a tractor trailer’s brakes locked up. Sitting a complete stop on the road, the truck was unable to get out of the way when a second tractor trailer struck it from behind. A third tractor trailer then hit the second, with a fourth truck sideswiping the third and ending up in a ditch.

News reports indicate that two people involved in the wreck were treated for injuries. All four tractor trailer drivers were charged – the first for having defective brakes, the other three for following too closely. Thankfully, no other cars were involved in this potentially very deadly crash.

Professional tractor trailer drivers should have known better than to be following so closely behind other large trucks. Unlike cars, which can stop relatively quickly, big SUVs, buses and trucks take much more time and distance to bring their large loads to a complete stop. Due to their heavy weights, it’s simply impossible for trucks like these to stop on a dime. It’s why all drivers are encouraged to increase their following distance when driving behind or near large tractor trailers. Surely these professional truck drivers were aware of the risks involved with following so closely, but chose instead to disregard their instincts. It’s truly amazing more people weren’t hurt in a crash like this one. Let’s hope these truckers remember this incident the next time they feel inclined to tailgate their fellow truck drivers.

The Midtown Tunnel was the source of much frustration for drivers in Hampton Roads yesterday. A crash in the tunnel caused delays in both Norfolk and Portsmouth as the road was closed for five hours. The accident occurred when two tractor trailers traveling opposite directions side swiped one another. The drivers were attempting to clear the tunnel to work out the crash report when a car side swiped one of the trucks. This side swipe disabled the truck, causing a gas leak in the tunnel. HazMat crews were called to the scene for clean up.

This was a nightmare for all parties involved. Two people involved in the crash were taken to the hospital with injuries. Reports indicate that traffic was backed up for more than 2 miles during rush hour. The fact that gasoline was spilled in the tunnel made it only more scary. Tunnels are incredibly dangerous spots for an accident to occur. Unlike crashes that happen in open road scenarios, tunnels prevent hazardous substances from being removed quickly. If smoke is involved, visibility can rapidly become a problem for drivers. Narrow lanes also present issues for cars driving too fast. One small mistake at the wheel in narrow lanes could leave you scraping the side of cars in the opposite lane – precisely what happened in this crash.

Hampton Roads is home to many tunnels, bridges and other sometimes scary roadways. With a large population of military families moving to the area, many drivers are unfamiliar with the challenges associated with these kinds of highways and roads. Always proceed with caution into tunnels, especially if you’re not comfortable or experienced with driving in such situations. Stick to the speed limit and be sure to keep your car within its lane.

One driver is dead after a serious accident on Route 288 in Chesterfield on Monday, April 6, 2015. The accident caused major backups, and traffic was eventually diverted forcing drivers to take a different route.

According to reports the Virginia State Police stated, “A 2006 Ford pickup was stopped the left travel lane when a 2008 Freightliner tractor-trailer approached and struck the pickup pushing it into a 2011 Peterbilt, after striking the trailer of the Peterbilt the pickup veered right and struck a 2014 Subaru Outback, both the pickup and the Subaru came to rest on the right shoulder.”

Tragically the driver of the pickup truck was killed. No other injuries have been reported.

There is no reason for a large truck to ever tailgate or follow other vehicles too closely. However, this happens day in and day out on highways in Virginia. In this case, it looks as if that is exactly what caused this tragic accident. It is essential that trucks maintain a safe following distance. This gives them enough time to safely brake in the event of an unexpected action ahead.

It can be difficult to think about in a time like this, but loved ones of victims killed in such accidents may have grounds to file a wrongful death lawsuit. In such a time of suffering and anguish, the last thing bereaved family members need to worry about is financial matters; it’s the responsibility of the at-fault driver or responsible entity to pay the attendant costs.

The colossal wreck of an Amtrak train was caused by a tractor-trailer driver with many traffic violations, according to court records.

The crash happened in Raleigh, North Carolina, when an Amtrak train slammed into a tractor-trailer on the tracks and subsequently derailed. Now new information shows that the driver of the tractor-trailer had “at least a dozen traffic violations,” including driving on a revoked license. Several years ago he was arrested for carrying a heavier load than was allowed; he subsequently did not appear in court in regards to the charges.

One question remains: why did the trucking company not know about this driver’s checkered past? It seems like the owners and operators of the company should not have hired a man with such a spotty record. Trucking is an inherently dangerous industry that requires safe, responsible drivers. Perhaps stricter screening laws need to be in place in order to prevent such awful accidents in the future.

People who are injured by such reckless drivers may have grounds to file a personal injury lawsuit against the trucker or the trucking company that hired him. You shouldn’t have to worry about irresponsible tractor-trailer drivers on the road—and if you’re injured by them, you shouldn’t have to pay for it. A police deputy in Rockbridge County, Virginia is recovering after a multi-car accident sent him to the hospital. The Officer pulled over along Interstate 81 North to conduct a traffic stop. He was in his patrol car when a tractor trailer struck his vehicle. He broke six ribs in the accident and was flown to the University of Virginia medical center. Police investigating the incident say it could have been much worse: the Pro-gard prisoner transport system in the patrol car protected the deputy from the tractor trailer totally crushing the car. The driver of the truck was charged with reckless driving, but was not injured in the crash.

This accident could have been much, much worse. Photos of the accident scene show total destruction. All of this could have been avoided had the truck driver followed the move over law, which requires drivers to give police and emergency personnel a lane of room for safety. When you see emergency vehicles ahead on the highway, you should carefully change to the other lane if possible. When drivers fail to obey such rules of the road, horrific accidents like this one can occur.

Emergencies on the highway can often be made worse by cars and trucks passing by. Do your best to avoid dangerous accidents by staying alert to the road in front of you, not on what might be happening on the side of the road. At worst, you could cause a wreck. At best, you and your fellow drivers create a traffic jam by slowing down to check out what’s happening.

Congress’s 2014 decision to mandate hours of rest for truck drivers was an unpopular one in the industry. Though the new system ensures a method to root out dangerous practices, critics have asked regulators to loosen up their rules and come up with a less strict system. The chief of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Scott Darling, recently defended the regulations at a Congressional hearing about fatigued truck drivers.

The new regulations have closed a loophole once used by the trucking industry to enable drivers to work 82 hour weeks, a dangerous and even deadly amount of hours to be behind the wheel. Insurancejournal.com reports that nearly 4,000 people were killed in accidents involving trucks in 2013. 24% of fatal crashes involve moderate to severe drowsiness. Those who sleep six to seven hours a night are twice as likely to be involved in an accident than those who get eight or more hours of sleep. These figures led the National Transportation Safety Board to recommend more nighttime breaks for truck drivers.

Trucking industry leaders claim that these nighttime breaks force thousands of trucks on the roads during the day, leading to heavier traffic in general. While this indeed may or may not have an impact on traffic flow, at least day time drivers would be safe in the knowledge that the trucker sitting behind them in traffic is awake and alert. Even if drowsy drivers don’t fall asleep behind the wheel, they tend to pay less attention to the road and have slower reaction times

Traffic can – at best – be boring and at worst, become deadly. A routine traffic jam on I-64 became deadly when a tractor trailer struck a pickup truck, setting off a chain reaction. The pickup spun and struck a van, which in turn collided with a second tractor trailer. This second tractor trailer then hit at Chevrolet work truck and forced a Pontiac into another tractor trailer.

The woman driving the Pontiac was killed in the accident. The driver of the first tractor trailer was charged with reckless driving. The driver of the work truck was taken to a hospital with injuries. Investigators are still working to understand exactly how and why this crash occurred.

Carelessness on the road is always dangerous, but anytime you add traffic to the mix, you’re bound to have accidents. Thankfully, more people were not hurt in this crash, but a family is now grieving the loss of a loved one. The wreck caused a four mile backup with the potential for even more careless accidents to occur.

The next time you’re in a traffic jam, make sure you keep your eyes on the road even if you haven’t moved much in the last few minutes. Traffic can start and stop seemingly randomly, and being the last to realize that cars are again stopping could be dangerous. Avoid the urge to pick up your cell phone and text or check email, no matter how bored you might be.
