4 Hurt in Pulaski Co. Truck Wreck

Four people are recovering from injuries sustained in a tractor trailer accident that happened in Pulaski County, Virginia. The December 27, 2017 collision occurred just after 3:00 PM on I-81 South near mile marker 94. The crash caused the road to close for several hours while emergency responders worked to clear the wreckage.

Police say seven vehicles were involved in the crash, which initially started when a northbound tractor trailer sideswiped another truck heading north. The impact caused both vehicles to run off the left side of the road and into the median. One truck was able to stop in the median while another continued into the southbound lanes of I-81. This caused collisions with five additional cars before the tractor trailer went over the guardrail.

The first tractor trailer driver was charged with reckless driving. The second was not charged. The four people injured in the wreck were in passenger vehicles. News reports indicate that one woman needed to be airlifted to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The Freight Effect

Tractor trailer accidents are different from other kinds of wrecks. They involve extremely large vehicles carrying heavy cargo. A minor slip made by the driver can (and often does) result in serious accidents. While it isn’t immediately clear why the two initial trucks sideswiped one another, it’s easy to see how dangerous the consequences were.
